AI visibility vs local SEO: what changed and what didn't

By Akshay · July 29, 2026 · 7 minute read · For owners and marketers

Here is the claim you will hear from agencies this year: AI visibility is completely new and everything you know about local SEO is obsolete. Here is the opposite claim, from other agencies: it is just SEO, relax.

Both are wrong in a way that costs you money. The truth is more specific and more useful.

The number that settles it

In a 2026 analysis of the same set of businesses measured both ways, ChatGPT named 1.2% of locations when asked for a recommendation, while those identical businesses turned up in Google's local map pack 35.9% of the time. Fewer than half the map pack winners appeared in AI recommendations at all.

So they are not the same thing. But they are not unrelated either, because the businesses that do appear in AI answers are overwhelmingly the ones with strong profiles and deep review histories, which is the same thing local SEO has always rewarded.

Why the gap exists: proximity

This is the cleanest explanation and almost nobody states it plainly.

Google Maps weights how close you are to the person searching, very heavily. That is why a mediocre business on the right corner outranks a better one two miles away. Proximity is doing a lot of the work in your current ranking, and you did not earn it.

An assistant asked for "the best plumber in Columbus" is not standing anywhere. It has no location to be near. So proximity drops out entirely, and everything else has to carry the decision: your rating, how many people wrote about you, how recently, what they said, and whether your details agree across the web.

Which means two things. If you rank well mostly because of your address, you are exposed. And if you are a genuinely good business on a bad corner, this is the best news you will read this year.

What carries over

What does not

What is genuinely new

Review text became the primary asset, not review count. Local SEO treated reviews as a volume-and-rating game. An assistant reads them. A review saying what someone came in for and what happened is worth more than five that just say "great service."

You get no feedback. Rankings drop and you see it in a tool. An assistant skips you and nothing happens. No alert, no line in a report. The only way to know is to go and ask, repeatedly.

Content has to answer, not rank. A page written to win position four can afford four paragraphs of throat-clearing. A page written to be quoted has to lead with the answer.

So what do you actually do

Keep doing local SEO. Nearly all of it still works, and Google Maps is still where most local discovery happens today.

Then add three things: check your AI visibility on a schedule rather than assuming, collect reviews that describe what happened instead of just awarding stars, and publish content that answers questions rather than targeting keywords.

That is the whole difference. It is not a new discipline. It is the old one, minus the crutch of proximity, with the text of your reviews promoted from a nice-to-have to the main event.

Common questions

Is AI visibility replacing local SEO?

No. Google Maps is still where most local discovery happens, and the work that wins the map pack overlaps heavily with the work that earns an AI recommendation. What has changed is that the overlap is not complete, so ranking well is no longer proof you are visible everywhere.

Should I stop doing local SEO?

Definitely not. Most of what you do for local SEO, particularly your Google Business Profile and your reviews, is exactly what AI assistants read. You are not choosing between them. You are noticing that one of them stopped being sufficient on its own.

Find out which side of the gap you are on

The only way to know whether your Google ranking is carrying over into AI answers is to check both. That is what the free report does.
